Turkey and pie leftovers!

On Nov. 20, 2017 over 25 law students came together to make the lives of homeless families a bit better- they prepared, bought, delivered and served Thanksgiving Dinner to the residents of the Family Shelter and St. Lawrence Place.  This has been a tradition led by the Pro Bono Program for over 15 years but could not happen without the support of student organizations.  BLSA, the Honor Council, the SBA and WIL were real troopers in this effort and judging from the smiles it was a total success.

enjoy these photos of the team in action!  Law student talents include making amazing mac and cheese ( thanks Buster) the pie team ( Maura and Patty), Grant and Sarah made sure things were hot, especially the gravy,  Dean Cherry, Ivey and Chelsea can portion out food with best and Brianna on bread was not to be messed with. Lauren made sure everyone got cranberry sauce ( even if they don’t like it) Simone documented the event in photos, Tony was on garbage duty! Chris and Joseph kept the cups of juice and tea flowing.  Lashawnda was a superb ringleader and the serving team ( too many to mention by name, I know I will forget someone) made our guests feel welcome and kept the plates moving and this was not easy in such a tight space! Clean up was a breeze and the leftovers will be a welcome reminder of this great event.  Thanks for the Thanksgiving!   Pam

Turkey Time!

For over 15 years the Pro Bono Program along with various student organizations have provided Thanksgiving Dinner for the residents of St. Lawrence Place- transitional housing center for homeless families.  This year BLSA, WIL and the Honor Council are joining us and we are adding the residents at the Family Shelter!  Yikes, but we can do it!

The event takes place on Monday, November 20 from 5:30-8. We are still in need of a few items. If you are interested in participating we would recommend quickly signing up to supply an item. The food is broken down into small, easily purchased or cooked items.  Nothing complicated and for things like pies- no one is going to be unhappy with a pie from Publix!!

All the details and the sign up are located here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0445a8a82ea1fc1-thanksgiving

The best part?  We feel good about helping and still able to share a meal together.

Home for Thanksgiving?

Between family visits, football and turkey why not take a few moments to tell someone about your first, middle or last semester in law school?  What were your favorite classes?  What advice would you give some thinking of going to law school? What do you want to accomplish before graduation?  Other lawyers in your family? Compare and contrast experiences!  And a myriad of other thoughts.

One way to record your story is with the StoryCorps app    StoryCorps app

It is easy and your story will be become part of the Great Thanksgiving Listen and if you agree it can become part of the Library of Congress Folklife Collection!

How cool is that? Story on !!!!

Brrr, dates set for Richland County CASA training

January 23,24, 25, 30, 31 and Feb 1st from 5:30-8:30 in Room 389 are the training dates for the Richland County CASA Program.

If you want to make a difference in the life of an abused or neglected child this is the project for you.  Afraid of babies? No problem, teens also need guardians ad litem.

This project does require an application which is available by stopping by the Pro Bono Office, Room 386.  RIchland County CASA also needs you to commit for 18 months but not to worry if you are going to be out of the Midlands in the summer, they can cover for you.

This is an important program that needs dedicated volunteers.  You will be appointed by a Family Court judge but will always have an attorney to represent you in court. and yes, you do need to attend all of the training dates so plan ahead!

Stuff you can use-Communication

Need a refresher in communication skills?  This article was great!

The Millennial’s Guide To Law School Communication

Do you know T.H.I.N.K before you speak?  T.H.I.N.K. is a tool to use before your speak. Ask yourself these questions before uttering something really stupid or offensive.

Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it inspiring? Is it necessary? Is it kind?  Each no is more reason not to say it, email it, text it!
