Justice Sonia Sotomayor: A conversation with Clemson students

This may have been a conversation with Clemson students but I can assure you it will resonate with you as a fledgling lawyer, especially her response to the question, ” How should a person prepare for law school?

Yesterday while Justice Alito was dazzling you with remarks at the dedication of the Law School I was in Clemson spending the day with Justice Sonia Sotomayor.  It was just serendipity that both justices were in SC on the same day!  These kinds of events take months to plan and you don’t always have control over schedules.

Why was I with Justice Sotomayor? Because one of my fun volunteer activities is to serve as the Chair of the Humanities Advancement Board at Clemson and we invited her… and she said ‘yes”

I will tell you it was one of the most thrilling events I have been involved with. She was engaging on a personal level and it was obvious she wanted to be with students!

Here is a link to a video of the full conversation.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn3GbXen58c&feature=youtu.be

This was not your typical lecture but I won’t spoil the surprise.  Photos with the two of us to follow! Enjoy

STAR Volunteer

What is a Star Volunteer?  A Star volunteer is someone that the members of the Pro Bono Program Board believe has jumped out ahead and just done a great job. It may be a small project, a one time event or just a difficult task that needed to be done and they stepped up with a great attitude.  There is no regular pattern to this recognition. You can’t apply for it, It will happen spontaneously and without notice. Suddenly a Star Balloon and a sign appear on your mailbox announcing that you are Star Volunteer.

Information about what volunteer efforts you made will be posted on this blog. Enjoy your moment in the stars and know that you are being appreciated.

Stuff you can use #1

Did you know that you can reserve the study rooms with the red walls?  Yup! Simply go to the Library homepage and reserve through their system. This gives you the right to gently “evict” anyone in the study room and also to let them know about this great system! Note:  the Library will not enforce your reservation- they are librarians not ninjas!  Be nice!
